Dear Friend,
I guess it was quite a few years back when we first ran into the "power-outages with kids" problem. My wife and I... had moved to a somewhat secluded area in Illinois, away from the noise of the city. We wanted space to breathe and a place where we could have a large garden and some freedom for our then young kids to roam without getting into trouble.
But when November of that first year at the new place came, we experienced some of the worst winter storms I'd seen in years. One, in particular, was extremely vicious. It started in the late afternoon, and by 6pm, a half an inch of ice covered literally everything in sight. The wind came up and was blowing at a consistent 40 miles per hour.
"It wasn't long before a limb snapped and the electrical power was out completely."
Seems like you always lose your power when you're least prepared.
As you might expect, we soon lost our electrical power, and we had to light our house with candles. We didn't think much about it, but by the second night, we were tired of yelling at the kids to stay from the candles. We had quite a few candles lit so that we could "see" what we were doing and the game of safe "candle keeper" took its toll. It was constant stress monitoring the candles and the kids.
Day three gave us a bit of a scare, as sure enough, one of our kids knocked a candle off a table and onto the carpet. We saw it right away (and extinguished the flames), but suddenly realized that a situation like that could have gotten out of control very quickly. We realized that candles were OK and better than nothing... but ultimately we saw them as a...
We decided that kids and candles are not a good mix.
It is interesting that 35 fires are caused each day by candles in the United States (2019 data). And while it only represents 3-4 percent of all house fires, it's still a scary number.
We did find a solution to the fire threat. We call it the Freedom Lantern.
And it's... why... years later... I still love the Freedom Lantern. Especially the new one.
Even though I've got all kinds of larger scale solar backups in place now, I always like to keep a few Freedom Lanterns on hand as a kind of "backup to the backups."
We always have one in the kitchen, one in the bathroom, and one in the living room. We've tested them against candles... and they produce a heck of a lot more light as you might imagine... and they stay bright for a lot longer too. (the new model Freedom Lantern provides 100,000 total hours!)
The years have passed and now that we've got young grand-kids around, the new and improved Freedom Lantern provides peace of mind during power outages.
